The four ADHD mess types

By Mara Ellery · Last reviewed 30 August 2026

ADHD mess almost always takes one of four shapes: the Doom Piler, the Floordrobe Keeper, the Out-of-Sight Out-of-Mind, and the Churn and Burn. Each one comes from a different mechanism, so each one has a different first move, and none of them mean you are lazy.

Why sort mess into types

"Just clean up" fails because it treats every mess the same. A pile of deferred decisions, a floor covered in clothes, a counter full of things left out so they are not forgotten, and a kitchen that swings from spotless to disaster are four different problems. The fix for one makes another worse. Put the Out-of-Sight person's things in drawers and they lose everything. Tell the Churn and Burn person to deep clean and you feed the swing.

This framework is Neurotidy's own, built from the patterns that kept repeating across more than 21,000 real ADHD threads about home life. It is a way to pick the right first card, not a diagnosis. Not sure which one you are? The 60-second quiz asks six questions about your actual home and tells you.

The Doom Piler

Every flat surface holds a someday-pile: mail, a charger, a plate, the thing you will deal with later. You mostly know what is in there. You just cannot make it not exist. The pile is every deferred decision stacked in one place, and the fix is to sort without deciding. Read about the Doom Piler.

The Floordrobe Keeper

Clothes live on the floor, the chair, the exercise bike, and clean and dirty have merged into one layer. Putting clothes away is six invisible steps your brain reads as one wall, so they stay out. The fix is one basket and one rule. Read about the Floordrobe Keeper.

The Out-of-Sight Out-of-Mind

If you cannot see it, it stops existing, so everything stays out and everything is everywhere. Closed drawers are where things go to die. This is working memory, not mess, and the fix is visible storage instead of hidden storage. Read about the Out-of-Sight Out-of-Mind.

The Churn and Burn

You do not clean, you CLEAN: a four-hour deep-clean spree, spotless for two days, then nothing for three weeks until it is unbearable again. All-or-nothing is the default, and the fix is a tiny floor so the spiral never starts. Read about the Churn and Burn.

All four are valid

None of these is a character flaw. Each is a predictable output of how an ADHD brain handles decisions, working memory, reward and time. The guides on this site explain those mechanisms, with the research they rest on, and the free task cards give each type a first move that fits.

FAQ

Can I be more than one ADHD mess type?

Yes, and most people are. The types describe the shape your mess takes most often, not a personality. Pick the one that matches the room bothering you most right now, use its first card, and come back for the next type when that one feels handled.

Is this a diagnosis?

No. The mess types are a Neurotidy framework for choosing a starting point, built from patterns in more than 21,000 ADHD threads. They do not diagnose ADHD or anything else. A messy room on its own says nothing about whether you have ADHD.
