The Out-of-Sight, Out-of-Mind
The Out-of-Sight Out-of-Mind is the ADHD mess type where anything you cannot see stops existing, so everything stays out, and everything is everywhere. Closed drawers are where things go to die, and the fix is visible storage instead of hidden storage, not more discipline.
How to recognise it
The chair is covered, but on purpose, because if that stuff went into a drawer you would forget it exists. The counter holds everything you own, because the second something goes into a cupboard you forget you own it. Your daily-use items live in clear bins and open baskets, or they are gone forever. If it is not by the door in plain sight, it is a daily search party.
When you put everything away properly, you cannot find any of it for a week, so you pull it all back out. That is the Out-of-Sight Out-of-Mind, one of the four ADHD mess types.
What is actually going on
People call this ADHD object permanence. The phrase is colloquial, and the honest version is working memory: the mental list of what exists and what needs doing is shorter and drops items faster when they are out of view. You know the charger still exists in the drawer. Your brain just stopped listing it, so it stops being used and stops being put back.
So the mess is your brain's filing system doing its job. Things stay out because out is the only place they stay real. The object permanence guide and the cups everywhere guide walk through the mechanism, with the research it rests on. Clear bins and open baskets are not clutter. They are how your brain remembers the thing is even there.
The first card to use: Visible Systems
Clear bins, open baskets, and one launchpad by the door so leaving the house stops being a search party. Every daily-use item gets one visible home. Hooks beat drawers. Trays beat cupboards. The rest, the things you do not use every day, gets put away, so the visible layer stays small enough to read at a glance.
The card is built for a brain that needs to see it. It does not ask you to remember where things are. It makes remembering unnecessary.
This card is not in the free five. The visible-systems cards are not published as a pack yet, so make your own version with the free task card maker and tape it where the stuff lives. Start with the free cards anyway. Doom Pile Triage and the Bad-Day Floor use the same format, and if the format works for you, the visible-systems cards will too.

FAQ
Is ADHD object permanence a real thing?
The phrase is colloquial. Adults with ADHD know an object still exists when it is hidden. What the research describes is a working-memory difference: things that are out of view drop out of the mental list faster. The lived experience is the same, so the fix is the same: keep what you use where you can see it.
Will open storage just look like clutter?
It can, if everything is out. The card is not permission to keep everything on the counter. It is a rule to give daily-use items one visible home each and put the rest away. Fewer objects in view, each with a spot, reads as calm and still stays findable.
